Children's Classes (6-13 yrs)

Our children's classes are specifically designed to help students learn and grow in a fun and safe environment. Here at Legacy Martial Arts we love to see our students excel and smile while learning new skills.

Martial Arts is a fantastic way for children to learn valuable life skills such as respect, confidence and discipline. In order to achieve the goal of Black Belt children must show a Black Belt attitude not just in the martial arts, but at home and at school. Being a black belt is not just about being able to punch and kick, its about developing the positive character traits within our students.

We believe children learn best when having fun which is why no class will be the same! Along with all the other character traits martial arts gives, we believe that having fun is just as important. Every parent wants to see their child enjoying themselves and learning at the same time, its the best way children learn!

With over 40 years combined experience teaching children Martial Arts in the West Midlands, the instructor and coaching team know exactly how to teach classes that benefits all students that walk through the door.

In partnership with one of the leading Psychologists in the UK, Dr Ged Lombard, we have developed an exclusive Life Skills programme that helps children develop both the physical benefits and positive character benefits alongside each other on their journey to Black Belt.

The Black Belt Journey

The initial main goal within the Martial Arts is the Black Belt, it is recognised all over the world as an achievement that takes years of hard work and dedication to obtain.

Regardless of the Martial Art that you study it is the belt that everyone wants, this is the same for both adults and children alike. However for a young child the 3 to 5 years it takes to achieve a Black Belt can seem like an eternity.

This is why we breakdown the journey to the Black Belt into smaller more manageable chunks, this coming in the form of the other 10 belts. Starting from a white belt your child will be taught the importance of goal setting both long term and short term to achieve what they want, in this instance their first short term goal is their yellow belt, their first step towards achieve it their long term goal of Black Belt.

Achieving the yellow belt is a great occasion for all children to remember as they get physically rewarded for their dedication and hard work, in front of their family and peers.

After the Yellow belt, the belts heading towards the Black Belt become darker in colour, but also metaphorically “heavier”, this is to represent the larger expectations for the higher belts, in terms of their physicality, mentality and behaviour both on and off the mat.

We normally grade every 3 months as long as the student has attended the correct number of classes and has shown the correct attitude, not just at Martial Arts, but also at home and at school.  We have found that for most children this is the perfect amount of time needed to grasp new concepts and techniques, whilst keeping them focused and interested by rewarding them which in turn helps them stay motivated on their journey to Black Belt.

We also understand that every child is on their own individual journey and so we tailor our programmes and curriculum to suit the individual, allowing them to progress at their own pace, in their own time. This is why we say the Black Belt takes between 3 and 5 years to achieve, because it is completely down to the individual and their circumstances.

Our Life Skills Programme

“Forty years of research and practitioner work with young people across the UK has convinced me that structured and challenging exercise, taught by professionals with expertise in relevant and accredited areas, is an essential component of social and personal development. The Legacy Life Skills programme meets this criteria and I would endorse this programme in schools.”

We place a large emphasis on the Black Belt not just being about punching and kicking, but on being a state of mind or an attitude that develops, through overcoming obstacles and learning through experiences.

We regularly reinforce what we believe to be the very best characteristics of a Black Belt, from their first day we teach the children about words such as; Commitment, Respect, Confidence and Focus to name a few. We talk in class about what it means to be a good role model and a positive member of society through our Life Skills Programme.

It is extremely important to us that we reinforce these positive behaviours outside of the Martial Art classes, ensuring that children are behaving at home and working hard at school, this is the true Black Belt. We provide exercises  job sheets and booklets for students to complete at home demonstrating that they are showing their “Black Belt Attitude” both at home and school.

What We Teach

Children's Self Defence
We are a Jeet Kune Do school, this means that we train under the philosophies of Bruce Lee, in short we do not teach just one Martial Art. This is again because we believe that all individuals are exactly that, and so what works for one may not work for another. So we teach a variety of Martial Arts such as Jun Fan Gung Fu, Western Boxing, Thai Boxing, Filipino Kali and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. In addition to this we also teach essential modern self protection skills and techniques. All of this gives every child a broad depth of understanding of many different Martial Arts rather than any one single style.

They will also learn about what it takes to be a positive role model, and what it takes to live a healthy lifestyle learning about regular exercise as well and the benefits of balanced diets and hydration. Students will be given the opportunity to partake in activities that allow them to develop the leadership skills, whether this means leading a team in a game, warming up the other students at the start of the class or helping out new students that start the classes. Every child will have a chance to demonstrate and develop their leadership abilities within classes while they train at Legacy, this will help to build both self confidence and communication skills in children of all ages.

Safeguarding

Legacy Martial Arts, in coordination with our governing body the BMABA, are committed to the safeguarding of both adults and children at risk. As a club we take safeguarding very seriously and have all the relevant procedures and policies in place. In addition to this, all instructors are DBS checked to an enhanced level and they all have the relevant safeguarding qualifications.

It is our core belief that everyone should benefit from the Martial Arts to help them them develop as an individual both through positive mental health and physical fitness. In addition to this, Martial Arts is there to make a positive contribution to the community. Every instructor at Legacy has a legal and moral duty to ensure that every participant is training in a safe and friendly environment, through professionalism and a high degree of duty of care.

We are proud to have been awarded the Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts “mark”.

Achieving the Safeguarding Code, demonstrates our commitment to upholding our duty-of-care to the community and young people and recognises Legacy as a martial arts provider that has reached and effectively maintained good safeguarding standards.

Developed in consultation with Sport England, The Safeguarding Code in Martial Arts has been created so that parents and carers can clearly identify a martial arts provider that have demonstrated that they have reached and maintained good safeguarding standards and can make informed decisions when selecting a club for their child.
