Jeet Kune Do (JKD)

At Legacy Martial Arts we teach Jeet Kune Do Concepts. Jeet Kune Do (JKD) was Bruce Lee's philosophy of training in the martial arts and is considered as a process of training in the martial arts rather than a style.

Every individual is different (age, speed, strength, height, mentality, etc.) so the idea behind JKD is that the individual trains in the most up to date, effective and modern martial art styles and finds what suits them as an individual.

Here at Legacy Martial Arts we teach a number of martial art styles in order for students to find their own way including Jun Fan Gung Fu, Western Boxing, Thai Boxing, Filipino Kali and grappling.

"Research your own experience, absorb what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is specifically your own" - Bruce Lee

Jun Fan Gung Fu

Jun Fan Gung Fu was Bruce Lee's pre cursor training method prior to his development of his personal Jeet Kune Do.  To qualify for JKD training you have to have the basics of Jun Fan first. It has a set curriculum that covers the four ranges of combat;
  • Kicking
  • Punching
  • Trapping
  • Grappling
Jun Fan is a great starting point for any martial artist looking to train in Jeet Kune Do.

Kickboxing

The kickboxing that is taught at Legacy is a mixture of different Martial Arts that cover movement, strikes and defences. These arts include Jun Fan Gung Fu, Boxing, Thai Boxing and Panantukan.

You will learn how to stand correctly and how to effectively move in and out of range against your opponent. You will also learn the different ways to strike an opponent from the different arts.

You will understand how to defend against strikes and then effectively counter strike against an attack.

Boxing

Boxing is one of the most commonly forgotten Martial Arts. It purely focuses on punching, footwork and balance and because of that it is a great Martial Art to train in to improve your hand speed and coordination.

Boxing is well known for fast and balanced movement, quick and hard punches along with defence and evasive counter punching.

It's also great for fitness and loads of fun!

Muay Thai (Thai Boxing)

Originally from Thailand, this stand up Martial Art uses a combination of strikes and clinching. Also known as 'the art of eight limbs' the person uses punches, elbows, knees and kicks to hurt the opponent.

Thai boxing is known for its tough and well conditioned competitors. This philosophy and style of training is taught at Legacy which means it is hard work but great for fitness and achieving goals!

Filipino Kali

An Ancient Martial Art from the Philippines that was the Martial Art that defeated Ferdinand Magellan and his Spanish soldiers in 1521. Kali is a very offensive Martial Art looking to inflict the maximum amount of damage to an opponent as effectively and efficiently as possible. More recently the Filipino Martial Arts have been in Hollywood films such as the Jason Bourne series and the Book of Eli.

Kali is based on triangles and circles with the highest triangle being love, humility and compassion.

There are 12 main areas in Kali such as single stick, double stick, single knife, double knife and empty hand (Panantukan).

At Legacy we teach Inosanto-Lacoste blend Kali.

Grappling

Grappling is an important part of the Martial Arts and there are many Martial Arts that have elements of grappling in such as Thai Boxing, Jun Fan Gung Fu, Filipino Kali, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), Greco-Roman Wrestling and Combat Submission Wrestling (CSW).

Grappling involves clinch fighting, takedowns, ground positioning and control, submissions, and striking on the ground.
